Thousands of years ago, human beings started to evolve. Since then, our species has walked a dark bloody road that condemned people to live in fear caused by ignorance. We have arrived to the 21st century of our era, after two World Wars, taking on our backs the possibility of nuclear conflicts with assured mutual destruction. Announced the “end of history” by your economists and intellectuals, it seemed that the possibility of looking for a fairer order was meaningless. Thinking that you had stopped enough our rational development, you let us raise a progress model whose objective was never more than make you even richer and more powerful.
However, you didn’t consider that the real human spirit refuses to bow, always. While you believed you would conquer us definitely using economic crises, our species has evolved again. Using only the power of culture and freedom, we have reused those technological resources that were born of our genius and that you only provided us with consumerist intentions. So we have updated, improved and immunized our strength, operations and effectiveness. We absorb your own tactics, techniques and imaginary to form our own mediums, dreams and challenges.
Today, the pacific revolution extends around the planet as a challenge to your oppression and your attempt to shut our freedom of expression. Finally, information has reached the critical mass, exploding in a lot of voices whose new wishes and needs can’t be covered by your old paradigm. Now, physically and digitally interconnected, we form a huge collective conscience. Maybe your corporate media silence what’s happening, but you can’t fool us anymore. You can stop temporarily some nodes but the process will continue unstoppable and transforming. Now, it doesn’t matter what measures you take trying to counteract: the more violence, censorship and obstacles you put in our road, the more you expose your weakness. In every place on Earth, with different ideas and from different conditions, have always existed, exist now and will exist in the future, women and men that oppose those which are not really democratic and fair governments. After millennia of suffering, our species has stood up and nothing will ever be the same. Your totalitarian game is ending. But the story, friends, hasn’t ended yet: it begins now. Citadela a fost construita de o specie de furnici-taietoare-de-frunze si cuprinde nenumarate coridoare si camere, întinzându-se pe o suprafata de 46 metri patrati si coborând pâna la 8 metri sub nivelul solului.
Se estimeaza ca, pentru a construi furnicarul subteran (descris drept echivalentul, în lumea insectelor, al Marelui Zid Chinezesc), a fost nevoie de dislocarea a cca. 40 de tone de pamânt.
Oamenii de stiinta au turnat 10 tone de beton în gaurile de aerisire ale furnicarului abandonat, pentru a umple toate golurile, apoi au sapat în jurul acestora, expunând astfel detaliile constructiei.
Furnicile-taietoare-de-frunze sunt numite astfel datorita faptului ca decupeaza portiuni de frunze pe care le transporta în furnicar, folosindu-le ca substrat pentru a creste pe ele ciuperci, care le servesc drept hrana.
Se considera ca aceste insecte formeaza cele mai complex structurate societati, dupa cea umana. Organizarea lor este foarte sofisticata, colonia având mai multe "caste" (regina, soldati, lucratoare) si interactiuni sociale foarte complexe.
Each semester, classes resume the challenge of improving on previous designs. At one point, their device had to be plugged into an outlet to work, then the students figured out how to make it battery powered. This semester, the students made it compatible with any music player.
The current model, known as free space optical transmission device, can beam “Party Rock Anthem” or any song from anyone’s iPod to a receiver and speakers up to 20 feet away. Its battery life is more than two hours.
“Seeing everything come together at the end, working even better than we expected, was really cool,” said senior electrical engineering major Jana Sardoni, who has already accepted a job offer from Intel to design processors.
Sardoni’s team produced the winning design. Their device ran the longest without recharging and also added an LED display that indicated battery life.
“This project gives them experience in building to a customer’s desired outcome,” said Aaron Hawkins, who taught the class with fellow electrical and computer engineering professor Stephen Schulz. “A concrete product where we say to them, ‘Here’s how it is supposed to work, to these specifications. You go find your own solutions.’”
The students built a transmitter, which plugs into an audio device, and a receiver, which plugs into speakers. The transmitter directs a laser to flash in a distinct pattern. They also created a circuit that can compute the flashes of light and translate them into a recognizable format for the speakers.
“They gave us a little bit more flexibility in this class,” said Matt Seamons, another member of the winning group. “After we’d learned a lot of the foundational things, the flexibility allowed us to think more innovatively. We showed that we could go out into the industry and be ready to hit the ground running and be successful.”
Greg Loveland and Raymond Barrier were also on the winning team.

Non sarà imprevedibile come i dinosauri clonati dall'ambra di Jurassic Park, ma di sicuro la pianta vecchia di 32mila anni germogliata nel Soil Cryology Laboratory di Mosca avrà molto da raccontare agli scienziati. I semi di Silene stenophylla rinvenuti nel sottosuolo della tundra siberiana hanno infatti conservato intatto il dna racchiuso al loro interno: una finestra spalancata sulla storia evolutiva delle specie vegetali. E pensare che il record di antichità era detenuto da una palma di soli duemila anni. Una bella soddisfazione per il gruppo di ricercatori coordinati dal geoecologo David Gilichinsky, che ha pubblicato uno studio sulle pagine di Pnas.
Come racconta il New York Times, è un fatto abbastanza comune che gli scienziati si imbattano in semi antichi e siano presi dal desiderio di farli germinare. La curiosità di vedere come si sviluppa una pianta dal codice genetico vecchio di decine di migliaia di anni trasmette sempre una certa emozione.
Č un po' come trovare un vecchio film abbandonato negli scaffali di un archivio e guardarlo per la prima volta dopo tanto tempo. Con l'unica differenza di poter conoscere l'età precisa dei semi attraverso una etichetta particolare, quella fornita dalla datazione con i radioisotopi del carbonio. Sono vecchi di 32mila anni, millennio più, millennio meno. Insomma, coetanei dei mammut e rinoceronti lanosi che popolavano la regione siberiana durante l'ultima glaciazione.
Vista l'età dei semi di Silene, gli scienziati erano abbastanza scettici sul fatto di poterli far germogliare semplicemente piantandoli nel terreno. La lunga permanenza nella tana degli scoiattoli lasciava poche speranze di resuscitare il materiale vegetale. Sebbene fossero stati rinvenuti più di 600mila piccoli frutti, era necessario qualcosa di più del semplice paleo-giardinaggio.
Così, il team di Gilichinsky ha pensato di prendere una scorciatoia e di prelevare alcune cellule contenute nella placenta (un organo del frutto dove sono conservati gli ovuli) e di trapiantarle in una piastra da laboratorio addizionata con ormoni vegetali. Si tratta di una tecnica che viene utilizzata spesso per riprodurre le piante, visto che le loro cellule sono in grado di dare vita a cloni perfetti dell'organismo originale.
Così, grazie al mix di ormoni e sostanze nutritive, l'equipe russa è riuscita a far sviluppare ben 36 piante. A prima vista, i fossili viventi apparivano del tutto simili ai pronipoti di Silene che vivono tutt'oggi in quelle zone, ma al momento della fioritura le cose sono cambiate. Le creature plurimillenarie hanno mostrato qualche differenza nella forma del fiore e, soprattutto, i loro semi germinavano nel 100% dei casi.
Un bel record per un fossile vivente, tanto da spingere gli scienziati a ipotizzare che in certe condizioni le piante dell'era glaciale potrebbero prendere il sopravvento su quelle dell'età moderna. Visto il progressivo assottigliamento dello strato di permafrost, non è affatto improbabile che altri semi fossili possano riattivarsi e invadere nuovamente la Siberia.
