After 70 years at the bottom of the sea, the corroded containers risk leaking deadly poisons, warns a Polish journalist.
In 2009, the Swedish public was shocked by a public TV documentary, which revealed how the Soviets had sunk chemical weapons in the Baltic as recently as 1992. Hidden-camera footage filmed from Swedish waters showed one such operation, in which the Soviet military was seen dumping containers of paralysis inducing gas and radioactive material straight into the sea.
More than by the act itself, the Swedes were outraged by the fact, which was initially revealed by investigative journalists and later confirmed by military intelligence, that some members of the Swedish government had been informed, as early as 1999, that toxic waste was being dumped near the island of Gotland, but had done nothing to prevent it.
In the early 1990s, Russia had to decide what to do with its vast arsenals of chemical weapons that were stored in former Soviet military bases in Latvia and Estonia — in particular, the largest stockpile of lethal agents, which was stashed in the Latvian port of Liepâja. At a time when the morals and the organisation of the Red army were crumbling, and without money to move or recycle the poison, the Soviet General Staff chose to ignore any concerns about the environment or the safety of Poles or Swedes. In a decision taken for purely economic reasons, they decided to dump the arsenal in the Baltic Sea.
Toxic soup
The results of their action quickly became apparent. Starting in the mid-1990s, there was a sharp increase in the incidence of lung and skin cancer among Swedish fishermen working between the islands of Bornholm and Gotland off Sweden’s southern coast. They were suffering from typical symptoms of exposure to mustard gas (sulphur mustard). However, non-experts had virtually no chance of identifying the agent that was source of the problem in the water.
Mustard gas is a virtually colourless liquid which has a “faint garlic or horseradish-type odour”. It can remain in the containers for decades, slowly leaking out into the environment and wreaking terrible consequences. Worse still, the corroded military containers will eventually break open, releasing massive amounts of lethal chemical warfare agents, and this is what is happening in the Baltic Sea.
At the Potsdam Conference in 1945 a decision was taken to get rid of a total of 267,500 tonnes of chemical munitions. The cheapest way to do this was to dump the arsenal in the Baltic Sea, mainly in the Bornholm Basin, which plunges to a depth of 100m, and the Gotland Deep, which reaches a depth of 459m in the Landsort Deep area.
All in all, the Russians dumped some 40,000 tonnes of all kinds of canisters and containers full of adamsite, mustard gas, phosgene, tabun, cyanide salts and prussic acid in an area approximately 2,800 sq km around the island of Bornholm. In 1945 in the strait of Little Belt, the British dumped 69,000 tonnes of tabun-armed artillery munitions and 5,000 tonnes of tabun and phosgene bombs. A year later, the Americans sunk 42 ships loaded with 130,000 tonnes of German chemical warfare munitions in the Danish straits. The German coast was further doomed when in the early 1950s, Soviet and East German forces dumped 6,000 tonnes of chemical weapons there. As for the coast of Poland, its greatest hazard comes from a large Soviet dump south of Gotland.
Burning strategic question
Do the Baltic states have any plan for neutralising the underwater chemical warfare arsenal? There is nothing to suggest so. Nor do any clear-cut policies exist on how to clean the sea waters of this terrible mixture of deadly toxins. Fortunately, the issue has been given an increasingly high priority. In November 2010, EU-financed explorations of the Baltic seabed began in an effort to assess the condition of dump sites and determine what should be done to neutralise the underwater chemical arsenals and prevent an ecological disaster.
Poland is leading a supranational project called Chemsea, which includes 11 research institutes from Poland, Sweden, Finland, Lithuania and Germany. A report by Helcom Muni, an ad hoc expert group specialising in dumped chemical munitions, is expected this year. But even the best military experts cannot predict what exactly would happen if the chemical agents were rapidly released from their corroded containers. Current thinking suggests the steel canisters used for storing chemical weapons will corrode slowly and that any leaks would release only minute amounts of toxic substances, which would then undergo relatively swift hydrolysis.
Scientists stressed that, being heavier than water, any leaked toxins would settle on the sea bottom. Moreover, the Baltic is not a high seismic activity area so barring physical damage, there seemed to be no cause for alarm. It was only the Russo-German Nord Stream Baltic gas pipeline project that triggered a major public debate on the possibility of a local – but massive – ecological disaster.
Still, officers at the Polish Navy say that it is not the pipeline or the chemical warfare dumps that pose the greatest risk. We often forget that the Baltic was also used as a dumping ground for all kinds of conventional weapons, including heavy munitions, air bombs, naval mines and artillery shells. If any of those ever explode, a chain reaction could cause horror on the Baltic beaches on a scale comparable with Chernobyl.
Until the Baltic states implement a coordinated policy to recover and neutralise dumped chemical munitions, the waters of the Baltic will continue to harbour a highly toxic threat and walking on Baltic beaches will continue to be a potentially deadly sport.

That is what the head of Russia’s Federal Drug Control Service stated, adding that more than 1million people have died from Afghan heroin since then.
“Afghan heroin has killed more than 1 million people worldwide since the ‘Operation Enduring Freedom’ began and over a trillion dollars has been invested into transnational organized crime from drug sales,” Viktor Ivanov said at the conference on the drug situation in Afghanistan.
Ivanov stressed that the main factor of instability in the war-torn country remains the prosperous heroin industry.
"Any impartial observer must admit the sad fact that the international community has failed to curb heroin production in Afghanistan since the start of NATO’s operation.”
According to his presentation at UN’s 56th session of the Commission on Narcotic Drugs in Vienna on March 11, opium growth has increased by 18 per cent from 131,000 hectares to 154,000.
As the situation in Afghanistan changed with NATO withdrawing its troops, Russia along with Afghanistan and the international community must face the new reality and develop an efficient strategy to deal with the heroin problem, explained Ivanov.
Opium production has been central to Afghanistan’s economy ever since US and NATO forces invaded in October 2001. Just before the invasion Taliban had implemented a ban on poppy growing, declaring it to be anti-Islam, which lowered the overall production. But after the West’s involvement, production resumed and now the country produces some 90 per cent of the world’s opium, the great bulk of which ends up on the streets of Europe and Russia.

US and NATO officials have been stuck in a Catch-22 fight against Afghan opium. At the UN Commission on Narcotic Drugs in Vienna in March, Ivanov stated that on the one hand, they are attempting to win the hearts and minds of the local population, which increasingly depends on the cultivation of opium poppy for their livelihood. On the other, they need to cut off finances to the Taliban insurgency, which is fueled by the sale of opium poppy to foreign markets.
About 15 per cent of Afghanistan’s Gross National Product depends on drug-related exports, which amounts business worth US$2.4 billion a year, according to UN 2012 figures.
Spokesman for Afghanistan's Counternarcotic Ministry Qayum Samir told Radio Free Europe on Monday that 157,000 hectares are being planted with poppies this spring, which is up by an estimated 3,000 hectares since last year. Samir argued that lack of security, lack of governance and widespread poverty are the reasons behind the increase in heroin production.
Moscow believes the simplest solutions are the most effective ones, and eradicating the country’s poppy fields is the key to solving the problem, underlined Viktor Ivanov.
But there is a big difference between how Russia and the US see the solution to the problem.
“Metaphorically speaking, instead of destroying the machine-gun nest, they suggest catching bullets flying from the machine-gun,” Ivanov explained. “We suggest eradicating the narcotic plants altogether. As long as there are opium poppy fields, there will be trafficking."
However, based on the US and NATO strategy, there seems no intention to get rid of all Afghan poppy fields, which is an inconsistency in the Western approach.
“The US together with the Colombian government eradicates 200,000 hectares of coca bushes a year. In Afghanistan, only 2,000 hectares of poppy fields are being eradicated – one 100th of that amount,” Ivanov pointed out.
And alongside the refusal to get rid of the poppies, there is the apparent interest of international banks in “dirty” money. Narcotics have nearly as large a share in total world trade as oil and gas, argued Ivanov in his presentation to UN.
The head of Russia’s drug enforcement suggested US and European banks tacitly welcome and “encourage” the inflow of drug money, he explained.
Gil Kerlikovske, director of the Office of National Drug Control Policy in the executive office of the US president, told RT that “We can intercept and seize tons of narcotics, we can make arrests of traffickers, but we really need to choke off the funds that supply this.”
Currently, Russia supports solutions proposing to improve social and institutional development in Afghanistan and discussing the problem at the international level.

Most folk are proud of their heritage, their lineage, where they come from. They will defend family and cultural heritage even when it becomes irrational to do so. Most of the history of Europe was a series of bloody arguments battles between various family dynasties.
Yet, no matter our individual spiritual or scientific or political beliefs, we all have a common heritage. We all belong to something we cannot escape from, yet. Something that had to exist before we could. Something that developed us in all our varied forms. Something that fed and sheltered us. Something that tried to teach our stubborn asses how to work together. Something full of wondrous beauty and if we are lucky, a quiet grace. If we are not so lucky, it rages tempestuously at times for seemingly no reason.
No wonder we often refer to it as “Her” and “mother”.
You are standing on it. Her.
Earth.
Without this planet, you would not exist. April 22, was Earth Day. It saddens me that we need a special day to remind us where we came from. It depresses the soul to see that so few remember or care.
How did we celebrate our mother today?
Another 175 square kilometers was deforested, destroying the biodiversity that makes our mothers beauty. Only 175 you say? That was just today. In just over a year that equals an area the size of Tasmania. For my American friends who are unaware that there are other land-masses on this planet, Tasmania is that big island under Australia (yes, Australia is on this planet too). That’s nearly 68000 square kilometers per year. Along with whatever strange and curious plants and animals that lived there, being driven to extinction, never to be seen again. Estimates vary, but about 50% (yes, that is a half) of the entire planets rainforests have been destroyed since 1900. Only 15% of the planets land was covered by rainforest to begin with, now we are down to 7%. That’s not good enough for us though, we are speeding up production and merrily planning to have the other half leveled by about 2030, 2040 at the latest.
Don’t mind us mum, just stealing the clothes off your back.

There have been many amazing suggestions and advances in technology that would allow this, but no, some fat bastards pockets are not full enough. Raping the earth in the hallowed name of profit. There are approximately 40 military ‘conflicts’ raging right now while you read this. I really couldn’t be stuffed talking about them. If you think wars are necessary, If you think US troops using depleted uranium on civilian targets in Iraq was necessary, if you think Israel has a right to use Palestinian kids for target practice, if you think terrorists are coming to get you and you should support the troops, if you believe the official line for any of this crap, congratulations – you’re an ignorant fool. The damage this is doing to the planet and it’s inhabitants is atrocious. It is not, never has been, never will be necessary in any way, shape or form so stop defending it.
To cut a long rant short, how about pollution. Every day I see people throw garbage at a bin, miss, then leave it on the ground next to it. Industries belching obscene amounts of gases and toxic chemicals into the air and waterways usually with little if any punishment. Yes the laws are there but so are lawyers whose sole goal seems to be to find loopholes for wealthy psychopaths. A car-wrecking yard near here was caught last week dumping waste oil into a nearby creek. They were shut down and fined. They should have been publically beaten. I could go on, but the screaming fit and following bout of depression turns me off. I’m pretty sure you get the idea.
At what point do you stand up and say, this is my home and I shall defend it as vigorously as I would defend my child? When is enough, enough? After the damage is irreversible? Would you treat your own mother this way?
The earth gave birth to you, fed you, and did all the things your own mother did. Even when you turned your back on her, began making your own decisions and mistakes, forgot where you came from, she was always there, still feeding you, still giving you a place to stay, always ready to forgive. She did all this for your brothers and sisters too, even when you fought amongst yourselves, even when your battles raged out of control and scarred your mothers face, she was still there for you.
How have you repaid this kindness?
Our ego-driven, competitive, patriarchal society has trained us to believe we have limited power, we can’t make a difference, that we are alone and helpless.
Don’t for a minute believe a word of it. How often do you hear of something terrible happening to someone’s child and you catch yourself thinking what you would do the perpetrator if that was your kid? If someone came into your home and violated your mother, beat her, defecated on her, tortured her, what would you do or like to do to the scum, if you were given the opportunity? No army on earth would stop me. How about you?
You and I have the power to fix things. I’ll bet you even have a few suggestions or ideas. There have been some great ideas brought forward, read about them, encourage others to think about them. Look for people trying to make a difference. Open your mind to possibilities. Look into some of the ideas like The Venus Project. It’s not perfect, even it’s founder says so, but it is a great place to start. Go have a look. You may even have an idea to help make it work.
And that is precisely what you can do that WILL make a difference. Start. Get involved. Educate your children, teach them to look after and protect their environment. Don’t be afraid to scold the people abusing your home, your mother. Don’t betray yourself with thoughts of inadequacy, or ‘I’m only one person what difference would I make’ etc.

Man learned the earth was round because ONE man said, ‘Hey guys, I think this place is round, lets sail around it and find out.’ We killed him, and a bunch more until finally someone grew a pair and got a group working together to prove it.
Man learned how to fly and built airplanes because ONE guy said, ‘Hey guys, wouldn’t it be awesome if we could fly like birds? Check out these wings I made!’ Then when he crashed and died some other people got inspired, they (eventually) worked together to figure out how to fly.
Getting the idea yet? It only takes one idea, it could be yours.
The next step is to work together. Learn to see our differences for what they are, just opinions, and stop being so emotionally attached to them being accepted by others. Many people will tell themselves, and others, that they don’t care what other people think. If that’s the case, then don’t. We need to express ourselves of course, but we also need to grant others the same opportunity. The sooner you start acting that way, the sooner those around you will too. (It’s actually a bit of a secret, but people get all warm and fuzzy inside when you hear them out without berating them for it. If they think your respectfully granting them the freedom to be themselves, they soon start repaying in kind. Shush, don’t tell anyone!)
When we start changing our ways, our world will change. We only have to start.

Maastricht mayor Onno Hoes has warned the city's 13 cannabis cafes that he will take legal action if they go ahead with plans to sell marijuana to non-residents on Sunday.
The local cannabis cafe association issued a statement earlier saying that all outlets will sell to people who do not live in the Netherlands on Sunday when the Netherlands celebrates the end of World War II.
By law the cafes, known as coffee shops, are only allowed to sell marijuana to people who officially live in the Netherlands.
Court ruling
However, a court ruling last week in favour of one coffee shop, closed by Hoes because it broke the rules, has given rise to hopes that the ban on foreigners may be dropped.
In addition, the bigger northern cities - Amsterdam in particular - have said they will use their discretion about imposing the ban, which means in effect it is being ignored.
The court ruling, which Hoes is appealing, said the mayor had failed to make it clear why foreigners should be excluded from the right to buy marijuana.
Before It’s News has interviewed a person, who spoke on condition of anonymity, that has been a victim of the virus implantation. The person was engaged in journalistic exposure of political corruption, and suddenly police appeared on his doorstep with a search warrant specifying a search for evidence of possessing and distributing child pornography. The story is a bit convoluted here, but basically the gentleman did a little more investigation and found rogue .exe files on his computer that appeared as normal emule sharing directories but contained “hundreds to thousands” of child pornography files. The potential whistleblower claims the virus was deliberately planted on his computer in order to stop his activity.
The article surmises the Internet Crimes Against Children task force may be behind the virus planting, though why is unclear.
“I believe it was surrounded by comine.exe along with another exe file that had random characters so I don’t remember that file name since it had a certain kind of random characters and I believe it may have been in the TEMP folder.
It came with three rogue P2P file sharing applications that were not stored in the usual file directories for programs or even portable programs. Those files are called ares.exe, emule.exe, and shareaza.exe. They share possibly illegal files and files with Trojans embedded without the computer owners permission despite invalid claims by law enforcement that no one can force a user to download and share files on P2P networks. When the user discovers them and attempts to shut down the program using process termination on Task Manager(taskmgr.exe) the rogue Trojan control program attempts to revive the operation of the rogue P2P programs and will fully operate within 3-5 seconds or even up to 10 seconds depending on processing speed from CPU. No matter how many times the user continues stopping the program it comes right back. ESET Virus Radar has recognized the virus, and calls it Win32/MoliVampire. The short description indicates, “Win32/MoliVampire.A is a trojan which tries to download other malware from the Internet. Win32/MoliVampire.A may be spread via peer-to-peer networks.”
The trojan contains an URL address. It tries to download a file from the address. Files are copied into a shared folder of various instant messengers and P2P applications, according to the description.
In a hurried article posted on Before It’s News, a reporter emoted:
So anyone whom receives this virus or variants of Trojans similar to this virus, is at risk of being accused of distributing and possessing child pornography then having the computers and family photos, videos, and other personal data taken away forever. Then will likely end up years in federal or state prison then receives a lifetime sex offender record, isn’t that just great!!!!!
ICE Pads Their Stats
Evidently, it isn’t only alternative-news journalists who are being targeted. According to a Facebook page supporting 17-year-old autistic youth Andrew Rose:
“Operation Flicker was started By ICE [Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency]. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement is the principal investigative arm of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the second largest investigative agency in the federal government. Created in 2003 through a merger of the investigative and interior enforcement elements of the U.S. Customs Service and the Immigration and Naturalization Service, “Operation Flicker” is part of Project Predator, a nationwide ICE initiative to protect children from sexual predators, including instances of sex tourism with minors, Internet child pornographers, criminal alien sex offenders, and child sex traffickers, according to the agency. Unfortunately, due to the system being used to net these predators, many children are being exposed to the the same Child Porn they were trying to stop.”
Apparently, in an effort to catch these dangerous internet predators, ICE attached child pornography images to .mp3 files on P2P sharing sites like LimeWire. Young Andrew Rose downloaded two songs that came with little surprise packages attached. Scandalously and shamefully, Andrew is actually being prosecuted. His lawyer, on the support page, stated:
“The FBI and ICE are the ones who exposed Andrew Rose to Child Pornography ….. They were the Traffickers and became “That which they Seek.”
