WikiLeaks has abandoned the Swedish servers it had previously used to store many of the confidential documents revealed by the whistleblower website.

“They left without saying anything to us. They haven’t used our services for awhile,” Mikael Viborg, CEO of Swedish web hosting company PRQ, told the Dagens Nyheter (DN) newspaper.

Viborg told the newspaper that he estimates stopped using his facilities about a month ago. He has since turned off the machines.

“They should have actually said they didn’t want to use our services any longer. We sent a final bill a few weeks ago which still hasn’t been paid,” he said.

Instead of servers based in Sweden, WikiLeaks now relies on machines based in France, according to DN, which used a traceroute to track the path traveled by internet traffic seeking to reach WikiLeaks.

PRQ revealed in August, just two weeks before the surfacing of rape allegations against WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, it had been helping the whistleblower websites since 2008 by hosting its servers at a secret basement location in a Stockholm suburb.

WikiLeaks "contacted us through a third party in Sweden a few years ago and... their traffic goes through us," the 27-year-old Viborg told AFP at the time.

He said the company's server hall housed several hundred servers and was located "somewhere in Solna," some five kilometres (three miles) from Stockholm's centre.

WikiLeaks had purchased a so-called tunnel service, he said, meaning "the material itself is somewhere else but is sent through our machines so for someone downloading the material, it looks like it is coming from us."

He stressed however that "we have no control over what WikiLeaks publishes.

Sweden's constitutional protections for confidential sources was cited at the time as one of the reasons behind WikiLeaks' choice of Sweden as a home for its servers.

Rules on source protection are written into the Swedish constitution and effectively block individuals and government agencies from attempting to uncover journalists’ sources. Revealing the identity if sources who wish to remain anonymous is a punishable offence.

However, the law only applied to websites or publications that possess a special publishing licence (utgivningsbevis) granting them constitutional protection, and WikiLeaks has not acquired the requisite paperwork, it was reported at the time.

WikiLeaks, which was founded in December 2006 and styles itself "the first intelligence agency of the people," published some 77,000 classified documents on the US-led war in Afghanistan in late July.

Then in October, the website released nearly 400,000 classified documents concerning the US war in Iraq.

An international warrant for Assange’s arrest was issued by Swedish police on Friday. The WikieLeaks founder has been accused of raping one woman in Sweden and sexually molesting another while visiting Sweden in August.

He has strongly denied the charges and hinted that they could be part of a "smear campaign" against his whistleblower website for publishing classified US documents on the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The controversial website WikiLeaks collects and posts highly classified documents and videos. Founder Julian Assange, who is reportedly being sought for questioning by US authorities, talks to TED's Chris Anderson about how the site operates, what it has accomplished and what drives him.

WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange is to challenge a Swedish prosecutor's "bizarre and exotic" request for an international arrest warrant, his lawyer tells Channel 4 News.

Mr Assange's lawyers are to launch an appeal after a Swedish court yesterday ordered the detention of Mr Assange on suspicion of rape, sexual molestation and unlawful coercion.

Mark Stephens, Julian Assange's UK-based lawyer, claimed to Channel 4 News that the prosecutor "jumped ahead" in her call for an arrest warrant, which is subject to an appeal in Sweden first.

Mr Stephens declined Channel 4 News an interview with Mr Assange directly on the basis that the prosecutor has not yet given Mr Assange details of the allegations against him, nor the evidence. He said Mr Assange has repeatedly asked to meet her and face police questioning.

"It makes it nigh on impossible to answer her. It is highly irregular. I have never seen this happen before," Mr Stephens said.

"She is deliberately poisoning the media well by portraying Julian as a rapist who's running from justice," he added.

'Flight risk'

Prosecutor Marianne Ny told the Swedish press however that she was not aware of Mr Assange's willingness to meet, adding that "the district court shared our opinion that there is flight risk in this case".

Mr Stephens, a partner at Finers Stephens Innocent, said Ms Ny's "cynical ploy" is in breach of Swedish laws. "The co-counsel was not even told what the allegations were until they stood up in court yesterday," he added.

Mr Stephens claims there is an attempt to "disadvantage" Mr Assange by running a smear campaign against the WikiLeaks founder, who was responsible for the largest ever leak of classified Iraq war files last month.

The 39-year-old Australian has a team of more than 160 Pentagon staff focusing on his activities, Mr Stephens said, alongside security staff from Britain's own GCHQ, M15 and M16.

The precise nature of the allegations remain ambiguous Mr Stephens said, as under Swedish law the sexual offences detailed could be anything from a lewd comment or a grope, to worse.

While Ms Ny could not be reached for comment, a statement on the Swedish Prosecution Authority's website reads: "Due to the ongoing investigation and the parties involved, the prosecutor cannot at the moment give more information concerning the suspicions or which investigation matters have been conducted".

Mr Stephens said the team of lawyers working on Mr Assange's behalf have over a century of legal experience between them and "not one of us have ever come across a case even in the Third World where the prosecution have declined to give information on the allegations or meet".

While he would not say where in the world Mr Assange is right now, it is understood he was in the UK earlier this week and had informed UK officials of his presence in the country.

Mr Assange remains willing to meet Ms Ny, Mr Stephens said.

"For all the Swedish taxpayers' money she has spent on getting InterPol etc involved, she could have hired a private jet and met Julian by now," he added.

I know a lot of boxing fans are not to happy that this fight is taking place. But I still want to here your opinions and your thoughts about this fight.

BoxRec

Manny Pacquiao (51-3-2 38 KO)
Antonio Margarito (38-6 27 KO)

I’m picking Manny for the win (surprised). Margarito didn’t look so good in his last 2 fights especially against his fight with Sugar Shane Mosley and now he is facing a extremely better fighter Pacquiao. I do not see this fight going the distance.

The only way I see Margarito winning is if gets Pacquiao in the corner or against the ropes and unloads on Pacquiao. But I believe Manny is to smart and quick to allow Margarito to that. Speed and mobility will be Pacquiao’s greatest advantage and if Manny keeps the fight in the middle of the ring he will win easily.

One other thing to consider is if Manny’s chin and body capable of taking big shots against these bigger guys like Margarito. The great thing about boxing is it only takes one big shot to change the outcome of this fight.

This fight will be taking place in the Dallas Cowboy Stadium (Texas).

UPDATE after the fight:

Pacquiao Vs Margarito Results & Highlights: PacMan Reiterates His Authority. In an one sided encounter, Filipino boxing sensation Manny Pacquiao defeated his Mexican-American opponent Antonio Margarito yesterday in Arlington, Texas, boosting his status as the world's top boxer. A total of 41,734 people were present at Cowboys Stadium to watch the fight in which Pacquiao (52-3-2, 38 knockouts) completely dominated his taller opponent.

Pacquiao used his speed and punches quite well to tame Margarito. Pacquiao launched 1069 blows and landed over 400 power punches during the fight, which itself shows that the Filipino boxer was super quick inside the ring.

The southpaw rained punches on Margarito and his right hook was equally lethal. With this win, Pacquiao claimed the title of the WBC super-welterweight champion. Though, Pacquiao won the fight quite comfortably, he said after the fight, "Margarito was my toughest fight. He hurt me badly to the body and head in the sixth round. He is very strong and has a great heart."

Pacquiao started very confidently and kept on dominating Margarito round after round. Pacquiao also known as Pac Man looked in total control of the fight and during the 11th round he turned to referee Laurence Cole hinting him to stop the fight. "I can't believe that I beat someone this big and this strong. It's hard. I really do my best to win the fight," said Pacquiao.

On his part, Margarito looked clueless in front of Pacquiao but he did not give up, though his efforts went in vain. "There was no way I was going to quit. I'm a Mexican, we fight until the end," Margarito said. (Source: lanewsmonitor.com)

HC/10/49

                                                                26 October 2010

GENEVA – The files reportedly indicate that the US knew, among other things, about widespread use of torture and ill-treatment of detainees by Iraqi forces, and yet proceeded with the transfer of thousands of persons who had been detained by US forces to Iraqi custody between early 2009 and July 2010.  The files also allegedly include information on many undisclosed instances in which US forces killed civilians at checkpoints and during operations.

The information adds to the High Commissioner Navi Pillay’s concerns that serious breaches of international human rights law have occurred in Iraq, including summary executions of a large number of civilians and torture and ill-treatment of detainees.

The US and Iraqi authorities should take necessary measures to investigate all allegations made in these reports and to bring to justice those responsible for unlawful killings, summary executions, torture and other serious human rights abuses, in line with obligations under international human rights law, including the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights to which both the US and Iraq are parties.

The High Commissioner calls upon Iraq to ratify the Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment and its Optional Protocol, which gives the UN Subcommittee on Prevention of Torture and other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment the right to visit all places of detention and examine the treatment of  persons detained.

High Commissioner Pillay also urges the Iraqi Government to facilitate visits of the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) Human Rights Teams to monitor the human rights situation in detention facilities so that necessary advice and assistance can be provided to the Iraqi authorities.

It's time to end the insanity and end marijuana prohibition.

500,000 Californians have been arrested in the past ten years for marijuana possession.
Mostly minorities and the poor.
$1.8 billion a year is wasted policing marijuana users.
When we could be using that money to fund jobs, healthcare, and public safety.
We can stop the insanity in California.
And lead the nation in a new direction.
It's time to end marijuana prohibition and legalize marijuana.
Vote Yes On Proposition 19...Tuesday, November 2.

What is Proposition 19?

Californians go to the polls Nov. 2 to vote on an initiative that would legalize possession and cultivation of marijuana. If approved Proposition 19 would make it legal for anyone 21 or older to possess, share or transport up to an ounce of marijuana for personal use and to grow up to 25 square feet per residence or parcel. Cities and counties would be authorized to regulate and tax commercial marijuana production and sales.

The measure could put California on a collision course with the federal government. The possession and sale of marijuana remain a federal crime and President Obama's drug czar, R. Gil Kerlikowske, recently has spoken out against legalization.

History of legalization in California

The vote this fall, the first on the question of legalizing pot in the state in four decades, is expected to draw national attention. In 1972, California voters cast ballots on an initiative, also named Proposition 19, that aimed to legalize marijuana. At the time, only one-third of those voting supported the measure.

A July Field Poll found that 48% of likely voters oppose the measure and 44% support it, a contrast with two polls taken in May that showed voters were leaning slightly in favor of the measure.

At 5pm EST Friday 22nd October 2010 WikiLeaks released the largest classified military leak in history. The 391,832 reports ('The Iraq War Logs'), document the war and occupation in Iraq, from 1st January 2004 to 31st December 2009 (except for the months of May 2004 and March 2009) as told by soldiers in the United States Army. Each is a 'SIGACT' or Significant Action in the war. They detail events as seen and heard by the US military troops on the ground in Iraq and are the first real glimpse into the secret history of the war that the United States government has been privy to throughout.

The reports detail 109,032 deaths in Iraq, comprised of 66,081 'civilians'; 23,984 'enemy' (those labeled as insurgents); 15,196 'host nation' (Iraqi government forces) and 3,771 'friendly' (coalition forces). The majority of the deaths (66,000, over 60%) of these are civilian deaths. That is 31 civilians dying every day during the six year period. For comparison, the 'Afghan War Diaries', previously released by WikiLeaks, covering the same period, detail the deaths of some 20,000 people. Iraq during the same period, was five times as lethal with equivalent population size.

A recent announcement was made, saying that George Soros, a billionaire who was born in Hungary, recently donated a million dollars to the “Proposition 19” campaign that is seeking to legalize marijuana in California.

The ballots on November 2 will contain an area for Californians to vote on whether or not Marijuana should be legalized in the State, a move that The Drug Policy Alliance is hoping for. The group’s main focus is to decriminalize the use of drugs in the United States. The group also confirmed that Soros had donated the million dollars to the “Proposition 19” campaign.

Soros earlier announced that he would be supporting the movement in the Wall Street Journal, although he did not give details about what his support would look like. Soros issued a statement to the magazine, saying, “Regulating and taxing marijuana would simultaneously save taxpayers billions of dollars in enforcement and incarcerations costs, while providing billions of dollars in revenue annually.”

He went on to say that legalizing marijuana would “also reduce crime, violence and corruption associated with drug markets, and the violations of civil liberties and human rights that occur when large numbers of otherwise law abiding citizens are subject to arrest. Police could focus on serious crime instead.”

War-torn states are still seen as being the most corrupt in the world, according to a new report from Transparency International.

The Berlin-based watchdog monitors perceived corruption and has published its annual report, based on a poll of businesses and people in 178 nations.

The worst country is Somalia, followed by Burma, Afghanistan and Iraq.

Denmark, New Zealand and Singapore tie for top place as the world's least corrupt countries, with the UK 20th.

'Good governance needed'

Transparency International was founded in 1993 and is a non-governmental organisation that monitors corporate and political corruption.

In its latest report, Russia is rated as among the worst for corruption, in 154th place. And Italy, down in 67th spot, now comes below Rwanda.

Meanwhile, emerging economic powerhouse China is in 78th place.

It is the poor and vulnerable who suffer the consequences of corruption, Transparency International found.

Hence, more should be done to enforce existing rules and laws, according to Huguette Labelle, chair of Transparency International.

"These results signal that significantly greater efforts must go into strengthening governance across the globe," she said.

"With the livelihoods of so many at stake, governments' commitments to anti-corruption, transparency and accountability must speak through their actions.

"Good governance is an essential part of the solution to the global policy challenges governments face today."

Chile and Uruguay are rated the least-corrupt countries in Latin America. In the Middle East, the best placed is Qatar.

Top-rated African nation is Botswana, in 33rd place.

Transparency International concludes that some countries have become more corrupt in the past year, particularly the Czech Republic, Hungary, Italy and the US.

Despite falling down the list, perhaps because of corruption revealed by the financial crash, the US still comes near the top at number 22.

California voters now oppose Proposition 19, the measure to legalize marijuana, by 49% to 44%, according to the latest poll from the Public Policy Institute of California.

The poll found a sharp reversal from last month, with support dropping 8 percentage points. The previous poll found that 52% of likely voters favored the measure. That poll, coming after others found that about half the electorate backed legalization, had encouraged supporters and helped bring in high-dollar donations.

The latest poll found a drop in support across all demographic groups, but most steeply among Latino voters. In September, 63% backed it. Now, 51% oppose it.

The latest poll shows that men are evenly split. In September, men favored the measure by 16 points. Women now oppose the initiative  50% to 41%. The earlier poll found them slightly in favor.

Independent voters strongly backed the measure, 65% to 31%, in September, but they now oppose it, 49% to 40%. Democrats support the measure by 56%, down 7 percentage points from last month. Republicans reject it by 66%, an increase of 4 percentage points.

The earlier poll showed overwhelming support among likely voters between ages 18 and 34. Support in that age bracket dropped from 70% to 59% this month. Support also slipped among voters 35 and older.

Much of the change appears to have been driven by evaporating support in Southern California. In September, 56% of likely voters in Los Angeles County and 52% in other Southern California counties supported the measure. This month, those percentages slipped to 41% and 42%.

The Public Policy Institute of California surveyed 1,067 likely voters Oct. 10-17. The poll has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.5 percentage points.
