Hamburg/Germany (October 11, 2010) – Vitali Klitschko (40-2, 38 KOs), and Shannon Briggs (51-5, 45 KOs), participated today in a press conference. World Boxing Council (WBC) Champion Klitschko and former WBO Champion Briggs will face off next Saturday at o2 World Hamburg, Germany. In Germany, the fight will be shown live and exclusively on RTL, in the US espn3.com will broadcast at 5pm EST in HD and rebroadcast the following day at 4.30 EST on ESPN main channel which reaches over 99 million homes in the US.
Vitali Klitschko:
“I see that Briggs is in a very good shape. He is a dangerous puncher and a very strong challenger who is a former heavyweight champion. I am ready and prepared for him and I will do everything to make sure to keep my WBC title.
Shannon Briggs:
“I had the best training camp of my career. I will fight different than all the other opponents Klitschko had before me. I am not afraid to fight him and I will take his WBC belt to the US.

AMBURGO - Vitali Klitschko (40-2-0) difende il titolo mondiale dei pesi massimi dall'assalto di Shannon Briggs (51-5-1) in un incontro dai netti contorni farseschi. Due trentanovenni di fronte per un mondiale: pur sempre un'anomalia per uno sport di contatto, ma nulla di inedito per la boxe. La questione è più complicata.
Di Ironfist, il maggiore dei fratelli Klitschko,sappiamo tutto o quasi: è campione dal 2008 (lo era già stato fra il 2003 e il 2004) e in carriera ha perso solo due volte, da Byrd e da Lewis, sempre per intervento medico. Nell'ultima difesa, a maggio, ha messo ko Sosnowski, non un fenomeno ma neanche l'ultimo arrivato.
Anche Briggs ha perso da Lewis, e anche lui è stato campione del mondo: ma per la Wbo, e per soli sei mesi, quelli trascorsi dalla conquista del titolo nel 2006 contro Liakhovich (un match che vedeva il bielorusso largamente in vantaggio, risolto da un colpo isolato di Briggs nell'undicesima ripresa) e la netta sconfitta ai punti contro Ibragimov. Persa la cintura, lascia la boxe per due anni e mezzo; torna nel 2009 e mette ko McGee, salvo risultare positivo all'antidoping.
In seguito il pittoresco pugile di Brooklin batterà avversari di media levatura quali Pedro, Alexander e Calloway: contro Klitschko sarà un'altra musica, e lo sa bene anche lui. Però sa dissimulare: compito facile per uno con trascorsi da attore (ha recitato anche con Will Smith), sebbene mai in un ruolo principale. Ma nella conferenza stampa di presentazione il protagonista è stato lui: "Mi sono allenato alla grande", ha detto, "sarò il rivale più forte che Klitschko abbia mai incontrato". Dopo una serie di occhiatacce spavalde, Briggs ha promesso di portare la cintura in America, dimostrando di conoscere il copione a menadito.
Decisamente più sobrie le dichiarazioni del campione: "Vedo Briggs in gran forma e so che è un pugile pericoloso. Farò del mio meglio per mantenere il titolo".
A fine agosto Klitschko aveva spiegato la scelta dell'avversario: "Volevo sfidare Valuev, ma il titolo Wbc non sembra interessargli; ho proposto il match ad Haye ma non ho avuto risposta, ha paura di affrontarmi. Avevamo pensato a Peter, ma doveva affrontare Wladimir (il fratello minore di Vitali, campione Ibf e Wbo, NdR), così allora abbiamo scelto il pugile più forte fra quelli che restavano".
Il match, il cui inizio è previsto per le 22,15, avrà luogo nella 02 Arena e trasmesso in diretta tv dall'emittente privata tedesca RTL, visibile in Italia attraverso il satellite Astra.
Vitali Klitschko è il miglior pugile del momento. Nessun dubbio. Ma si parla poco di lui, e del suo lunghissimo regno di campione. Che sia superiore agli altri, è dovuto alla sua altezza e alla sua potenza (carica meglio i pugni e arriva più lontano). Pecca in carisma, per questo se ne parla poco? Gli amanti del pugilato stanno comunque perdendo grandi incontri.
