This raises the possibility that patients' own stem cells may one day be rescued and banked to treat their age-related diseases.

Stem cells are immature cells that have the potential to convert into bone, muscle, blood vessels, nerve fibers, and other body cells and tissues. It's no wonder medical science seeks to utilize these versatile cells to restore tissues deteriorated by age, disease or injury.

Older stem cells are not as robust as young ones, however — a challenge to clinicians who seek to use patients' own stem cells to treat age-relateddiseases.

"The number and quality of those cells decline with age, that is very clear," said Xiao-Dong Chen, M.D., Ph.D., a stem cell researcher at the UT Health ScienceCenter. "And, using the patient's own cells can impact results."

Dr. Chen's team recently made a discovery in mice that, if translated to humans, could solve this predicament.

Old cells expand when grown on a young scaffold of tissue
Dr. Chen suspected that giving stem cells a youthful environment for growth would cause them to regenerate faster. His team extracted mesenchymal stem cells from the bone marrow of 3-month-old mice and 18-month-old mice. The group also obtained extracellular matrix (ECM) from mice of both ages. ECM is a scaffold of connective tissue, such as collagen, which constitutes a majority of the body's structure.

The lab team seeded half of the older stem cells on ECM from the 3-month-old mice and half on ECM from the 18-month-old mice. Likewise, half of the young stem cells were seeded on the young ECM and half were seeded on the old ECM.
Young and old cells showed a 16.1-fold and 17.1-fold expansion, respectively, when grown on ECM from young mice, compared to a 4.1-fold and 3.8-fold expansion when grown on ECM from old mice.

Finding confirmed in rodent implants
Next, under the skin of mice, Dr. Chen's group implanted artificial scaffolds seeded with stem cells of both ages that had been grown on young or old ECM. These were left to grow for eight weeks. The researchers targeted bone formation. When the implants were removed, the team found that old cells that had been grown on a young ECM produced just as much bone as young cells, while old cells grown on an old ECM produced no bone. The results were published in the FASEB Journal earlier this year.

"If this research transfers successfully to clinical application in humans, we could establish personal stem cell banks," Dr. Chen said. "We would collect a small number of older stem cells from patients, put those into our young microenvironment to rescue them — increasing their number and quality — then deliver them back into the patient."
This stem cell rescue and infusion could be done as often as disease treatment requires it, he said. The next step is to repeat the study in human stem cells and ECM.

A new device that combines two microimaging technologies can reveal both the detailed anatomy of arterial linings and biological activities that, in coronary arteries, could indicate the risk of heart attacks or the formation of clots in arterial stents. In their report receiving early online release in Nature Medicine, Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) investigators describe using an intra-arterial catheter combining both optical frequency-domain imaging (OFDI) and near-infrared fluorescence (NIRF) imaging to obtain simultaneous structural and molecular images of internal arterial surfaces in rabbits.

"The ability to measure both microstructural and molecular information from the same location in the artery wall could provide a much better diagnostic tool for assessing vascular pathology, information that is highly relevant for diagnosingcoronary artery disease, vulnerable plaque and evaluating stent healing," says Gary Tearney, MD, PhD, of the Wellman Center for Photomedicine and the MGH Pathology Department, co-senior author of the article.

Developed at the Wellman Center, OFDI utilizes a fiberoptic probe with a constantly rotating laser tip to create detailed molecular images of interior surfaces such as arterial walls. While OFDI can be used to guide procedures like coronary artery angioplasty and to confirm the correct positioning of metal stents inserted to keep cleared arteries open, its ability to determine important details of stent healing is limited. Properly healed stents become covered with endothelium, the same tissue that normally coats the arterial surface; but stents can become coated with the clot-inducing protein fibrin, which may put patients at risk for stent thrombosis – a clot that blocks bloodflow through the stent – and OFDI cannot determine the molecular composition of tissue covering a stent.

Intravascular NIRF technology was developed in the MGH Cardiovascular Research Center (CVRC), in collaboration with colleagues at the TechnicalUniversity of Munich, and uses special imaging agents to detect cells and molecules involved in vascular processes like clotting and inflammation. Recognizing the potential advantage of combining both technologies, the Wellman researchers worked with the MGH-CVRC team, led by Farouc Jaffer, MD, PhD, of the MGH Heart Center to develop an integrated OFDI-NIRF imaging system incorporated in the same intravascular probe used for OFDI alone.

The team first confirmed that the system could provide detailed structural images of a stent implanted in a cadaveric human coronary artery and could accurately identify the presence of fibrin on the stent. In a series of experiments in living rabbits, the OFDI-NIRF system was able to detect fibrin on implanted stents – including areas where it was not detected by OFDI alone – and to identify the presence of both atherosclerotic plaques and enzymatic activity associated with inflammation and plaque rupture. The enzyme signal detected by NIRF was not uniform throughout the imaged plaques, indicating biological differences that could be relevant to prognosis and treatment planning.

"At present we are not able to predict which patients may develop stent thrombosis, but integrated OFDI-NIRF can assess many key factors linked to the risk of clot formation," says Jaffer, co-senior author of the Nature Medicinereport. "If OFDI-NIRF is validated in clinical studies, patients at risk for stent thrombosis could undergo a 'stent checkup' to determine how well the stent is healing. Patients with unhealed stents could be advised to take or continue taking specific anti-clotting medications. Patients with well-healed stents, on the other hand, could potentially discontinue anti-clotting medications, which can cause excess bleeding." Clinical adoption of the integrated technology will require FDA approval of the molecular contrast agents used in NIRF.

Immaginate, come è ovvio che sia, che negli anni sempre più persone decidano di trasferirsi in quest'area e che Google, altro passo ovvio, decida a un certo punto di investire direttamente sul territorio di sua proprietà aprendo negozi, ristoranti e banche che vadano a concorrere direttamente con quelle già presenti e di diversa paternità. Č a questo punto che Google viene chiamato da un'autorità sovrastatale a spiegare, o meglio a rassicurare in merito, in che modo gestisce la concorrenza commerciale a Googlelandia: spinge i cittadini verso i suoi esercizi commerciali? In che modo permette o meno a strutture di altri di avere successo? Si comporta correttamente? E, in definitiva, se invece di uno Stato fosse il mondo intero, è giusto che sia Google a decidere cosa funziona o cosa no?

L'ex amministratore delegato e presidente di Google Eric Schmidt è stato chiamato al cospetto della commissione Giustizia del Senato statunitense a a fornire lumi sull'equivalente situazione che si è generata online. Si potrebbe andare avanti all'infinito prendendo tutti i concorrenti di Google Places, Google Shopping, YouTube, Google Books, Google Flight eccetera eccetera e interrogarsi, anche con prove pratiche, sulla visibilità che hanno su Google Search. La risposta sarà sempre la stessa: agiamo in buona fede e nell'interesse dell'utente, che fra l'altro può tranquillamente approdare altrove. Ed è questo, per ora, l'ago della bilancia. Lo strapotere di Google è sotto gli occhi di tutti nei dati degli istituti di ricerca, 65% del mercato Usa in agosto, ma a differenza di quanto accaduto offline a Microsoft non è stato ancora dimostrato che all'internauta viene imposto qualcosa. Che si tratti dell'utilizzo del motore di ricerca stesso o dei risultati che genera. Il monopolio è di fatto e nasce da precise scelte quotidiane, le alternative ci sono e sono a portata di click. Google fa un sacco di soldi con la pubblicità e questo continuerà inevitabilmente a esporla a rivendicazioni di questo tipo o a accuse come quelle mosse a Street View, mancato rispetto della privacy, o a Google News, sfruttamento dell'attività giornalistica, e starebbe facendo intensa attività di lobbing per evitare di finire nell'occhio del ciclone come Bill Gates anni fa. Studiul ar putea conduce la noi metode de diagnostic si tratament si cel mai probabil va fi utilizat în aplicarea legii.

"Descoperirile noastre sunt primele de acest gen ce releva faptul ca se poate utiliza un sistem automat pentru a detecta modelele de vorbire ale psihopatilor", a declarat Jeff Hancock, profesor în cadrul Universitatii din Cornell, SUA.

Oamenii de stiinta au comparat declaratiile a 14 criminali psihopati întemnitati cu cele spuse de alti 38 de criminali care nu au fost diagnosticati ca fiind psihopati. Fiecarui subiect implicat în studiu i s-a cerut sa descrie în detaliu crima comisa. Relatarile acestora au fost înregistrate, transcrise si analizate de un computer.

Psihologii spun ca un psihopat nu are sentimente, nu este capabil de empatie si nici nu are remuscari. Acestia se poarta ca si cum lumea ar exista doar pentru a fi folosita în beneficiul lor si utilizeaza minciuna si emotiile prefacute pentru a-i manipula pe ceilalti.

Cuvintele folosite de subiectii studiului s-au potivit acestei descrieri. Psihopatii au folosit adesea conjunctii precum: deoarece, întrucât, astfel încât, ca si cum considerau ca fapta lor "trebuia facuta" pentru a atinge un tel personal. De asemenea, ei au folosit de doua ori mai multe cuvinte care fac legatura cu nevoile fizice precum mâncare, sex si bani comparativ cu criminalii non-psihopati.
Psihopatii sunt capabili sa reproduca detalii legate de hrana pe care au consumat-o în ziua crimei.

În relatarile lor, folosesc verbe la trecut, fapt ce sugereaza ca s-au detasat complet de crima.

Certo anche quando compriamo qualcosa nei negozi, a volte, dietro ad uno sconto, si nasconde una fregatura, ma … a volte, in finanza invece possiamo esserne sicuri, se viene usata la parola “sconto” noi dobbiamo leggerla come “fregatura” e più lo sconto è alto, più grande sarà la fregatura.
 
La dimostrazione più lampante l’abbiamo nelle operazioni di aumento di capitale, che avvengono, tipicamente, offrendo ai vecchi azionisti, la possibilità (il diritto) di acquistare nuove azioni “a sconto”, cioè ad un prezzo inferiore rispetto a quello di mercato.
 
Peccato, però, che questo “sconto” non venga praticato per agevolare il vecchio azionista, bensì per imbrigliarlo in una trappola per topi senza via d’uscita. Più lo “sconto” è elevato, infatti, e più egli sarà costretto ad aderire all’operazione perché l’eventuale “mancata adesione” gli procurerà un’ingente perdita (di solito proprio pari allo “sconto” praticato).
 
C’è inoltre una cosa che aggrava ulteriormente la situazione, ovvero che l’adesione all’operazione di adc  non è gratuita, quindi se il vecchio azionista in quel momento non ha i soldi per aderire? Peggio per lui, scatterà inesorabile la trappola per topi, dopotutto se è un pezzente perché ha comprato azioni? Andando avanti di questo passo sarà sempre più arduo trovare investitori in Borsa.
 
Allora scendiamo dal teorico al pratico e, naturalmente, rifacciamoci all’operazione di aumento di capitale le cui condizioni sono state rese note ieri dal Consiglio di Amministrazione della Banca più importante d’Italia, Unicredit.
 
Allora ogni vecchio azionista avrà la facoltà di sottoscrivere due azioni di nuova emissione per ogni azione ordinaria e/o di risparmio posseduta, al prezzo prefissato di 1,943 euro ciascuna. Il comunicato della Banca specifica che “il prezzo di sottoscrizione delle nuove azioni incorpora uno sconto del 43% circa rispetto al prezzo teorico ex diritto (TERP) delle azioni ordinarie Unicredit sulla base del prezzo ufficiale di borsa del 3 gennaio 2012”.
 
Allora usciamo dal burocratese per cercare di rendere chiaro a tutti ciò che significa questa frase, innanzitutto va stabilito cosa si intende per TERP, lo faccio molto volentieri in quanto puntualmente, ad ogni operazione di aumento di capitale, trovo nella mia casella di posta alcune mail di lettori che mi chiedono di specificare il calcolo di questo prezzo teorico.

 
Allora TERP sta per Theoretical Ex Right Price, cioè Prezzo Teorico dopo l’attribuzione del diritto d’opzione, ed ovviamente va calcolato rispetto ad una valore di chiusura del titolo azionario in questione.
 
Al solito risulterà più semplice da comprendere un caso pratico che non il concetto teorico, e prendiamo proprio, come esempio,  l’operazione Unicredit. Una sola precisazione prima dei numeri, tutti noi siamo abituati a prendere come valore di chiusura di un’azione il suo prezzo di riferimento, il calcolo del TERP, invece, prevede l’utilizzo del  Prezzo Ufficiale, che normalmente differisce, anche se non di molto, dal prezzo di riferimento.
 
Allora il Prezzo Ufficiale di una azione Unicredit alla chiusura del 3 gennaio era risultato 6,40 euro (lasciamo perdere i millesimi ed i decimillesimi che creano solo confusione).
 
Qual è il TERP calcolato su questo valore di chiusura?
 
Semplice equivale a calcolare il valore teorico dell’azione dopo la conversione dei diritti associati alla stessa.
 
In questo caso, dato che i diritti permettono l’acquisto di 2 azioni al prezzo di 1,943 euro cadauna,
 
1,943*2 = 3,886 euro che è il valore delle azioni di nuova emissione per ogni “vecchia” azione posseduta, a questo importo dobbiamo sommare 6,40 euro, ossia il prezzo ufficiale della “vecchia” azione, per un totale, quindi di
 
3,886 + 6,40 = 10,286 euro, ma ora quante azioni ci ritroviamo?
 
Naturalmente 3 (una “vecchia” + le 2 di nuova emissione) per cui quanto vale (teoricamente) ogni azione?
 
10,286:3=3,4287 euro (3,4286 periodico per i pignoli).
 
Questo è il TERP calcolato sulla chiusura del 3 gennaio, quindi 3,4287 euro.
 
Applicando uno sconto del 43,33% (per la precisione) al TERP (3,4287-43,33%*3,4287)  troviamo questo, ormai celebre prezzo di 1,943 per ogni nuova azione, comunicato ieri dal Consiglio di Amministrazione di Unicredit.
 
Ieri il titolo Unicredit ha perso in Borsa il 14,45% crollando a 5,415 euro, come mai? E’ uno di quei casi in cui la risposta degli analisti è unanime, proprio perché “lo sconto” è stato ritenuto troppo elevato, come volevasi dimostrare: più forte lo sconto, maggiore la fregatura.
 
Ed il mercato, sotto questo punto di vista, è impietoso.
 
Se infatti a questo aggiungiamo che il fondo di investimento americano Blackrock è passato nei giorni scorsi dal 4,2% del capitale all’1,71% e che le Fondazioni, grandi azioniste della Banca di Piazza Cordusio, con l’eccezione di quella di Verona, parteciperanno solo parzialmente all’operazione di aumento (e la Fondazioni Banco di Sicilia e Cassamarca hanno annunciato che non sborseranno un solo euro), il quadro è completo.
 
C’è qualcuno entusiasta dell’operazione che ha annunciato di aderire in toto all’operazione di aumento mantenendo inalterata la propria quota del 4,98%? Sì proprio il maggior azionista di Unicredit: La Banca Centrale Libica, ma non è che la notizia debba far felici gli italiani.
